Encouraging The Groom

Do I really have to do this?

The pre-wedding gauntlet causes many Bridegrooms to utter questions just like this.

One might wonder why Men frequently are less enthusiastic about weddings than their brides . One of the reasons may be this test of social events that are often uncomfortable for Grooms . Some Grooms are less socially oriented than their fiances’ . Some Men have difficulty putting their emotions on public display.

The pre-wedding process can be challenging for both fiances’ and Grooms , but there is a high degree of stress and anxiety faced by Bridegrooms . The process is both emotionally challenging and can be very expensive. The process may be describes as a social gauntlet .

Is it any wonder that Men feel a little awkward at some of these events? In a sense they are like a test of his endurance. In another sense, it may be a test of his love.

As a minister, I make it a practice of meeting with brides and Bridegrooms a month or so before the wedding. In a majority of the situations, the ladies are all excited and full of ideas. The brides come with questions and notebooks ready to lay out every detail. Often Bridegrooms come along with their ladies and sit there with blank stares.

I discovered, that Grooms have their own ideas, but they may hesitate to share their thoughts, feelings, and interests. For this reason, after listening and interacting with the brides ; I turn to the Bridegrooms and begin asking open ended questions to uncover their thoughts.

Are weddings just for brides ? Some have suggested so. On the other hand, to have a wedding you need both brides and Grooms . Maybe out of a desire to avoid strife or not wanting to suppress their fiances’ ‘ enthusiasm; Men are often less aggressive as it relates to their weddings.

Great ideas and deep seated feelings are often held by Bridegrooms . Expressing these with sensitivity is an art. It takes some thinking, listening, and dreaming as well as careful open communication.

The wedding planner or coordinator, the wedding minister, and the fiances’ can greatly help support the Men by early planning, effective listening, and genuine efforts to include the Grooms in every phase of the process. The better Grooms feel about being part of their own pre-wedding and wedding; the more likely they will enjoy successful marriage.

Wedding day dreams are fashioned very early by girls, but boys seldom give their weddings a second thought until their hearts are overwhelmed with love and passion for their dream girl. It may take a little time, understanding, and support; but Bridegrooms are an important part of any wedding.
